Orthodontic treatment for children

If there’s one thing that is guaranteed to make you smile, it’s seeing a child’s face light up with a cheeky grin. At Clear Smiles Orthodontics, we love welcoming younger patients to our clinic because we believe a beautiful healthy smile starts early.

And we’re not the only ones. The Australian Society of Orthodontists (ASO) recommends children have an orthodontic evaluation no later than the age of seven.

Family-friendly practice

At your child’s initial assessment, we will evaluate his or her teeth and jaws and identify any problems we believe may arise as your child’s mouth continues to develop. By spotting these potential problems early, we will be able to reduce the amount of orthodontic work your child may need in later years.

If your child sucks his or her thumb, this can result in other problems, but again, we’ll be able to identify these at your child’s initial assessment and put a treatment plan in place.

Why is early treatment important?

Like most things, prevention is better than cure, and this couldn’t be truer than with children’s teeth. Establishing a regular routine for teeth care at an early age is incredibly important for your child’s orthodontic health and can help prevent plaque build-up, which leads to cavities and gum disease.

Phase 1 treatment

Your child won’t necessarily need orthodontic treatment, or if they do, they may not need to start straight away. However, in some cases we may recommend your child starts with what is known as Phase 1 treatment. This treatment is designed to prepare your child’s teeth and jaws for necessary treatment later on and, by taking this proactive approach, you could reduce the extent of treatment required.

Phase 1 treatment does involve wearing an appliance. At Clear Smiles Orthodontics we use a variety of appliances:

  • Palatal Expanders – one of the most common orthodontic problems we see in children is a narrow arch. This means there is not enough space in your child’s mouth for their teeth to come through in the right position. This leads to crowding and can increase the risk of cavities. Palatal Expanders help to widen your child’s arch creating room for their adult teeth to come through.
  • Invisalign First Aligners – are used to widen your child’s arch, creating room for their teeth to erupt and grow. Much like Invisalign for adults, Invisalign First aligners are custom-made to your child’s requirements which makes for a more comfortable treatment experience. They’re also removable so your child can keep up their oral hygiene routine that you’ve worked so hard to implement!
  • Carriere Appliances – at Clear Smiles Orthodontics, we want to ensure we limit the need for extractions when it comes to orthodontic treatment for our younger patients. Carriere appliances help us with this. Their sleek and non-invasive design makes for greater comfort, helping put our younger patients at ease with having orthodontic treatment. What’s more, Carriere Appliances, which are designed for precise molar movement, can shorten treatment time by up to four months.
  • Space Maintainers

We Have Custom Plans for Children! Orthodontist Treatments for Small Smiles

Your child’s smile is precious, and you want to make sure they can continue to smile proudly as they get older. The best way to ensure they grow up with straight, healthy teeth is to give them a head start by seeing an orthodontist at a young age. The Australian Society of Orthodontists (ASO) recommends that children should have their first orthodontist consultation no later than the age of seven.

At Clear Smiles Orthodontics, we welcome little patients! We want them to discover that dental treatment is nothing to be scared of, and take early steps to encourage a straighter smile.

Braces for children

Your child might never need braces, but an early consultation at a young age can assess any problems which are likely to occur as their teeth and jaws develop. If potential issues are spotted early, measures can be put in place to reduce the amount of orthodontic work your child may need later on.

There are a number of treatment plans that are suitable for children:

  • Space maintainers – if your child loses a tooth early, they might need a space maintainer to ensure there is enough room for their adult tooth to come through.
  • Carrier appliances – these reduce the need for tooth extractions, and are designed to minimise discomfort as much as possible.
  • Palatal expanders – these widen the arch in your child’s mouth, so there is enough room for adult teeth to come through without overcrowding.

There is also the option of Invisalign First aligners. Like adult Invisalign, these are clear plastic aligners, but in the early stages, they are used to widen your child’s arch to prepare for adult orthodontic treatment. As your trusted Invisalign providers on the Gold Coast, talk to us about if  Invisalign aligners are a good option for your child.

And remember, Invisalign is a registered medical device. You should read and follow instructions for use on the label and of your treating orthodontist. This will help ensure safe use and the best results possible.
