Orthodontic treatment for children
If there’s one thing that is guaranteed to make you smile, it’s seeing a child’s face light up with a cheeky grin. At Clear Smiles Orthodontics, we love welcoming younger patients to our clinic because we believe a beautiful healthy smile starts early.
And we’re not the only ones. The Australian Society of Orthodontists (ASO) recommends children have an orthodontic evaluation no later than the age of seven.
At Clear Smiles Orthodontics, we understand the dentist can be a slightly scary place for children, but we work together to ensure each of our young patients is put at ease and comfortable in the dentist’s chair!
What’s more, our orthodontist, Dr Semaan, has six children so he certainly knows the importance of early orthodontic treatment!
Why is early treatment important?
Like most things, prevention is better than cure, and this couldn’t be truer than with children’s teeth. Establishing a regular routine for teeth care at an early age is incredibly important for your child’s orthodontic health and can help prevent plaque build-up, which leads to cavities and gum disease.
What happens at an early treatment consultation?
At your child’s initial assessment, we will evaluate his or her teeth and jaws and identify any problems we believe may arise as your child’s mouth continues to develop. By spotting these potential problems early, we will be able to reduce the amount of orthodontic work your child may need in later years.
If your child sucks his or her thumb, this can result in other problems, but again, we’ll be able to identify these at your child’s initial assessment and put a treatment plan in place.
Phase 1 treatment
Your child won’t necessarily need orthodontic treatment, or if they do, they may not need to start straight away. However, in some cases we may recommend your child starts with what is known as Phase 1 treatment. This treatment is designed to prepare your child’s teeth and jaws for necessary treatment later on and, by taking this proactive approach, you could reduce the extent of treatment required.
Phase 1 treatment does involve wearing an appliance. At Clear Smiles Orthodontics we use two types of appliances:
- Palatal Expanders – one of the most common orthodontic problems we see in children is a narrow arch. This means there is not enough space in your child’s mouth for their teeth to come through in the right position. This leads to crowding and can increase the risk of cavities. Palatal Expanders help to widen your child’s arch creating room for their adult teeth to come through.
- Invisalign First Aligners – are used to widen your child’s arch, creating room for their teeth to erupt and grow. Much like Invisalign for adults, Invisalign First aligners are custom-made to your child’s requirements which makes for a more comfortable treatment experience. They’re also removable so your child can keep up their oral hygiene routine that you’ve worked so hard to implement!
