12 things parents need to know about Invisalign for Teens®
Hey teens – if you’ve been told you need braces, don’t despair. Here at Clear Smiles Orthodontics we can straighten your teeth using Invisalign aligners, which are a fantastic alternative to braces. Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible so no-one will even know you’re having treatment! Tell your parents to read the info below so they understand how amazing Invisalign aligners really are!
1. What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is the virtually invisible way to straighten your teen's teeth without the restriction and discomfort that come with wearing braces. Rather than wires and brackets, Invisalign® uses a series of clear, removable aligners that have been custom-made for your teen's teeth. Your teen simply wears them over their teeth and changes them out for a new set of aligners every two weeks. Little by little, your teen’s teeth gradually shift into place, achieving that confident smile.
2. Is Invisalign as effective as traditional braces?
Yes. When worn according to the recommendations of an experienced Invisalign-trained orthodontist, like our very own Dr Semaan, Invisalign can be as effective as traditional braces for the most common teeth straightening issues. Invisalign can effectively treat mild to severe cases, including underbite, overbite, overcrowding and gaps between teeth. The chances are very high your teen will be a great candidate for Invisalign. To find out for sure, call us on 07 5593 3733 to arrange a free consultation.
3. What are some of the practical advantages of Invisalign over traditional braces?
If you’ve had braces yourself, you already know the issues associated with metal wires and brackets.
With Invisalign, the aligners are removable, so your teen can play sports without the worry of being hit in the mouth by a ball, which can cause real damage in braces. They can also continue playing musical instruments properly, without braces getting in the way. With braces, there is a long list of foods your teen shouldn’t eat, from popcorn to apples and raw carrots. With Invisalign, there are no such restrictions. The removable aligners make it easy to brush and floss normally to maintain proper oral hygiene.
4. Are there any emotional concerns to consider?
Research1 shows that mums underestimate the extent to which teens feel self-conscious about crooked teeth, and using braces as a solution can often make this lack of confidence even worse. But with Invisalign, no one needs to know your teen is straightening their teeth, removing a potential source of real anxiety for them and giving them the confidence to be themselves in front of everyone, even during the teeth straightening process.
5. Who is eligible for Invisalign?
Invisalign can be used for teens who have erupting or erupted permanent dentition—this includes most teenagers. A trained Invisalign orthodontist should evaluate your teen’s specific dental issues to determine candidacy. If you’ve already had an orthodontic consultation and been told your teen is not a candidate, please see us for a second opinion, as each provider has a different level of experience treating with Invisalign and it is very rare for Dr Semaan to determine that a teen is not an Invisalign candidate.
6. How long does Invisalign treatment take?
Average treatment time is about the same as with traditional braces, but how long your teen is required to wear their Invisalign aligners depends on the severity of their condition and can only be determined by your orthodontist. In more and more cases, Dr Semaan is achieving faster results for teens using Invisalign. And fewer appointments means less time out of school and work.
7. How much does Invisalign cost?
At Clear Smiles Orthodontics, Invisalign costs about the same as metal braces. Costs for orthodontic treatment can vary with the complexity of treatment. Some health funds will cover orthodontic treatment with Invisalign so it does pay to check what your fund entitles you too. We also offer flexible and affordable monthly payment plans as well.
8. Does my teen have to wear Invisalign all the time?
Invisalign treatment is most effective when worn 20 to 22 hours per day, with sets of aligners changed every fortnight. Invisalign also a way for teens to track how often they are wearing their aligners. Using a blue dot wear indictor that fades over time, our orthodontist can track compliance.
9. What happens if an aligner gets lost?
Not to worry— Clear Smiles Orthodontics offers six replacement aligners for free! In the event that an aligner is lost, you should call us right away so we can decide whether to order you a replacement or simply move on to another aligner.
10. How much time will be spent visiting the orthodontist?
Invisalign often requires less time with your orthodontist than traditional braces. There are no adjustments to make and no broken brackets or wires to fix. After the initial appointment, follow-up appointments are usually scheduled for every 10-12 weeks. Traditional braces require visits about every 4-6 weeks.
11. Will I see the orthodontist at every visit?
Our orthodontist spends his time on those things that matter most for your smile. His speciality will be used in designing your amazing smile and overseeing that design come to life. This design phase is crucial for a smooth treatment process and outcome. You will normally see one of our highly trained staff who carry out Dr Semaan's exact instructions that he has carefully stepped out visit by visit for your entire treatment plan.
12. What if my teen doesn’t comply with Invisalign?
At Clear Smiles Orthodontics, we are so confident that your child will have a positive experience with Invisalign that we offer a CSO Invisalign Guarantee.
Our Invisalign Guarantee
If, during the first six months of your teen's Invisalign treatment, your teen isn't having a positive experience with Invisalign or it’s “not working” in your opinion, then we will switch to metal braces at no extra cost to you.
Invisalign for children
At Clear Smiles Orthodontics, we recommend bringing your child in for an early orthodontic consultation by the age of seven. This is also the age recommended by the Australian Society of Orthodontists.
If your child needs Phase 1 treatment, which is preparatory treatment prior to them having orthodontic treatment, we use Invisalign First, which are thin aligners that can help to widen the arch. Just like Invisalign for adults and Invisalign for Teens, these aligners are virtually invisible so your child won’t have to worry about what they look like with an orthodontic appliance.
