Invisalign

Invisalign and Braces are both teeth straightening options but they are different in how they go about it. Invisailgn rates higher with patient satisfaction and oral health. We have found in our practice on the Gold Coast that Invisalign is a very popular choice for orthodontic treatment, particularly with adults. We have more than half of our patients in treatment with Invisalign and more than half being adults. Coincidence, we think not.

One of the many reasons people choose invisalign at our Gold Coast practice is the many benefits that invisalign offers over traditional braces. The evidence of these benefits is clear (no pun intended) and a group of German researchers have formalised these benefits in a study titled: Braces versus Invisalign: Gingival parameters and patients’ satisfaction during treatment: A cross-sectional study.

The study compared the oral health status, oral hygiene and overall treatment satisfaction of 100 patients. 50 were treated with braces while the other 50 wore Invisalign aligners. The researchers performed clinical examinations before and after the treatment to observe the patients’ dental health and any changes that occurred. A detailed questionnaire was also used to assess each patient’s oral hygiene and diet, as well as how satisfied they felt with their treatment. Apparently, all of the patients were given the same oral hygiene instructions, which included being advised to brush their teeth, floss and use an interdental brush three times a day.

The study found that patients wearing Invisalign aligners experienced a significant improvement in their gum health. These was also a slight decrease in dental plaque for patient in invisalign.

One of the biggest differences between Invisalign and braces was when it came to really came patient satisfaction. 56% of braces patients said the braces irritated their gums, while only 6% of invisailgn users said that. Four times as many braces patient reported they felt self conscious about their smile and laughing due to aesthetic reasons when compared to the invisalign group.

Invisalign rated better again with less eating restrictions and was much easier to keep the teeth clean when compared to braces. The researchers drew on the data from the study to conclude that Invisalign clear aligners have significantly lower negative impacts than braces, especially when it comes to overall health and gum health and much higher overall patient satisfaction.

As Invisalign also offers you a discreet, removable and effective way to straighten your teeth, it is reassuring to read the findings from this study.
